Take your next writing exam with confidence with our 5 useful tips.
At times writing, can feel like an impossible task. Add the pressure of an exam and it can become extremely stressful. Writing is regarded as the hardest part of learning any language and many of my students ask me how they can successfully pass the writing part of an exam. So, I am going to give you my top five tips on how to pass in your writing exam.
1. Practice, practice, and more practice.
This is quite an obvious tip. However, it’s a very important one. Practice writing tasks as many times as you possibly can. Take advantage of online resources. There are hundreds of websites where you can practice writing exams. Make the most of any writing assignments that your English teacher gives you and listen to their feedback.
2. Reading will help you improve your writing.
Believe me, the more you read in English the better you will be able to write. Reading in English can help to improve all areas. As your comprehension progresses your vocabulary will also increase and so will your spelling and grammar. Try reading one of your favourite books in English or read English newspapers and magazines. There are so many ways to read in English, do it as often as you can. I often tell my students to make reading in English a daily habit because doing so has many benefits.
3. Read the question.
Under the pressure of an exam it is easy to make mistakes. One of those mistakes is to not read the question properly or to misunderstand it. Read the questions very carefully, consider what you are being asked to do and if time permits, make simple notes before you write your answer.
4. Remember the word count.
Most exam tasks have a word count, the maximum number of words you can use in your answer. Pay attention to this and make sure you use the correct number of words allowed. As easy as this tip is, many people fail to do it correctly. Not writing enough could seriously affect your mark.
5. Review your work.
When you have finished writing your answers, don’t just put your pen down and relax, check your work. Go over everything you have written and check for spelling and grammar mistakes. It’s also a good idea to see how your answers are connected. Use this checklist that I give to my students to check your work effectively.
Ask yourself these questions.
Have I clearly answered all the tasks?
Is it easy to read?
Do I have the correct number of words?
Have I used linking terms and discourse markers to connect my ideas and opinions?
Have I used the correct punctuation? (Capital letters, full stops, commas)
Do my answers contain spelling mistakes or grammar errors?
You should always ask yourself these questions about your work before you finish.
If you follow and apply these five tips you will pass a writing exam.
