What’s unique about British English?
Well basically, it’s because British English is made up of lots of unusual phrases and expressions that simply don’t exist in other variations of English.
Let's look at an example of British English...
Here's a typical British sentence;
"Blimey mate! That's a corker. Where did you come across that whopping thing?"
Now you are probably thinking, is this really English? I can tell you it certainly is real English and it demonstrates how bizarre and challenging British English can be!
However, don't worry I can help you...
Let’s break this sentence down so that we can understand it better;
SITUATION: The speaker is given something by his friend
Is an expression that expresses amazement, astonishment or a big surprise.
Is a slang term commonly used instead of friend. However, it is often overused.
This means that something is remarkable or astonishing. In Northern British English it can also mean extremely large or over sized.
So, we now understand that the speaker in this sentence is reacting towards something strange his friend has brought with him.
Now the speaker asks: "Where did you come across that whopping thing?"
Phrasal verb which means to find something unexpectedly.
Is an adjective that means extremely big or incredibly large.
So, to simplify this strange sentence, we could say:
"Hello friend, that’s amazing. Where did you find that great big thing?"
So, the real question is how can you start to sound more like a native British speaker?
