How can positive affirmations improve my English language and what exactly are they?
Positive affirmations are empowering phrases which you repeat to yourself which describe how you want to be.
‘’I’m successful with my English’’
‘’I find English fun and enjoyable’’
‘’I’m in control of my progress’’
‘’I can speak English accurately and with confidence’’
All of the above statements are what we call positive affirmations.
You may already be familiar with positive affirmations and maybe use them for different areas of your life, such as work, finance and relationships. Here at Online English Skills we use them all the time, so I can verify that they are powerful, and they do work. For this reason, I want to share the powerful concept behind them, so you can make huge progress with your English practice.
In a previous article we wrote, we talked about how many English students have limiting beliefs towards their abilities in English. Unfortunately, thinking like this can take away the power to improve your English language.
Limiting beliefs in other words, are when you “think too much” about what could happen, and convince yourself that you are incapable of doing or achieving something.
If you want to succeed with anything, it’s best not to think this way!
Everyone is guilty of having limiting beliefs, it’s just the way we have been taught or brought up. The best way for you to remove limiting beliefs is to first identify them.
Then you want to change them for more positive ones...
This is then, where you can use positive affirmations to reinforce and make them believable to you.
The theory (I believe it's much more than just a theory!) is that when you first start saying your positive affirmations, they may not be true, but with repetition they will sink into your subconscious mind, you will start to believe them, and eventually they become your reality therefore helping you to improve your English!
Think about this for a moment; you can actually influence your own English success with powerful positive affirmations. Positive affirmations lead to positive emotions which in turn lead to focus, motivation and action towards your desired outcome or goal.
In contrast, when we feel bad about ourselves we become unmotivated, depressed, and are at a greater risk of failure.
If you are really serious about making progress and improving your English, then I recommend you start using positive affirmations to help you gain the right attitude and emotions that lead to success!
Create and Use your Own Positive Affirmations in Four Easy Steps...
To come up with your own positive affirmations, I would suggest using the following guidelines:
The very first thing we need to look at before creating our own personalised affirmations is to visualise our goal.
VISUALISATION – You need to be specific on your goal or objective. Let’s say that you want to reach English fluency or speak at native level. This is your goal or aspiration. It’s important to be clear and specific as possible.
Learn how to set and achieve your English goals here!
CREATE YOUR STATEMENT – Once you have visualised your goal, it’s now time to create your positive statement. It’s a good idea to use the present tense for this, as it implies you already have achieved the goal, not that you are waiting for it to happen in the future. Always make your statements positive and empowering.
POSITIVE AFFIRMATION EXAMPLES:
I can speak English confidently
I use advanced vocabulary when I speak English
My English grammar is excellent
I have perfect pronunciation
WRITE THEM DOWN - A good way to remind us of our personal affirmations is to write them down somewhere, preferably where you will often see them.
REPETITION – The magic lies in the repetition. Make sure to repeat your affirmation as many times as you can. Rather than repeat them mentally or out loud, another alternative would be to make a recording of yourself repeating these affirmations and listening to them.
Now you really have to start using these affirmations as much as possible. They only work with constant repetition. If at first you don’t feel any different towards English, be patient you will feel the difference soon. We are sure for those of you who try this you will definitely notice a change to your English practice.
