The key to long term memory of vocabulary is how much attention or association you give to a new word when you first encounter it.
What do we mean by this? Well, when you learn a new word the more time you spend on associating that word with either it's opposite (antonym) or a (synonym) a different word with the same meaning, the more likely you are to remember the new word. You can also look and find phrases that contain your new word, such as collocations and idioms etc. Then you can associate it with something personal to you. This helps you remember easier. Plus this way you can double the amount of words you learn. To help you do this you can use a mind map or a spider graph to help you record new words. The next time you encounter a new word think about these points. Dictionaries are helpful to learn more about words.
